Once reserved for serious athletes, protein bars have become the top choice of many health conscious individuals seeking a convenient and nutritious snack.

Simple to toss into a gym bag, purse, or briefcase, protein bars are the new “go-to” healthy food source for busy, active adults.

Perfect after a workout or just to tide you over until your next meal, the ideal protein bar provides an optimal balance of quality protein and fats.

If you already purchase protein bars, then I don’t need to tell you… There’s no shortage of bars to choose from! Now close to a $2 billion industry, you have literally hundreds of bars to choose from.

Pick the right one and you contribute to your fitness and health goals. Make one of the common mistakes that many people make when shopping for protein bars and you can risk sabotaging your health...

How Does Your Protein Bar Stack Up?

The choices can be overwhelming.

With so many protein bars available on the market today, it can be challenging to know which bars are best for you and your family.

Protein Bar Labels
What's hiding in YOUR protein bars? Soy, hydrolyzed whey, gluten, sugar, and unhealthy processed ingredients?

Many contain far too much sugar, too many carbs, and the wrong kinds of fats, all of which can have negative effects on your body.

And certain sweeteners may lead you to actually gain weight!

Then there’s the issue of protein…

Let’s take a closer look at the labels of two of the top selling protein bars. Here’s what you’ll find as their primary protein sources:

BAR #1 BAR #2
Soy Protein Isolate Hydrolyzed Collagen (gelatin)
Whey Protein Hydrolysate
Whey Protein Isolate
Soy Protein Isolate

In Bar #2, note that hydrolyzed collagen – or gelatin, as it’s commonly known – is the first, and therefore, most abundant source of protein by weight.

Derived from animals, gelatin lacks the complete array of essential amino acids.

Because it’s inexpensive, hydrolyzed collagen is sometimes used as filler.

If you’re familiar with the pros and cons of soy protein and whey protein isolates, you might seriously question whether you’d want to ingest either of these bars on a regular basis

The Myth Lives On

Surprisingly, many consumers still believe the myth that soy is a health-promoting food. Nothing could be further from the truth...

Soy protein isolate is dried, powdered protein that’s isolated, or separated, from the soybean. It’s used in bars, protein shake mixes, soy foods, baked goods, and even infant formulas.

Soybeans
Soybeans aren't the health food they're cracked up to be…

To produce soy protein isolate, soybeans are mixed with an alkaline solution to remove the fiber and then acid-washed, typically in aluminum tanks, which can leach aluminum into the final product.

The powder is then extruded through a high-temperature, high-pressure process, further denaturing soy’s proteins.

Considering that the vast majority of U.S. grown soybeans are now genetically engineered, I have additional concerns about consuming soy protein...

Researchers have recently discovered that glyphosate, the dangerous chemical in weed killers used on genetically engineered soy, can intensify the potentially harmful effects of the naturally-occurring phytoestrogen in soybeans, genistein.

Regular, or unfermented soy, also contains an abundant supply of phytic acid, an “anti-nutrient” that can leech vital nutrients from your body and block your body’s uptake of essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc.

I strongly caution against consuming any type of unfermented soy, and that includes soy protein isolate in bars or any type of protein powder.

Whey Protein May Not Be for Everyone, Every Day Especially Whey Isolates

I’m a huge fan of quality raw milk whey protein, but I realize it’s not for everyone.

As with any animal protein, when consumed day in and day out, certain individuals may develop an allergy to whey. For that reason, I recommend mixing protein sources so you’re not consuming the same one on a regular basis.

And for those with a dairy sensitivity, or if you’re a vegetarian who wants to avoid dairy products, whey may not be a suitable choice.

That said, there’s a major difference between whey protein isolates and the whey protein found in my full line of whey protein concentrate shake powders.

Unlike my raw-milk, cold-processed whey protein concentrate, whey isolate comes from pasteurized dairy and is processed with both heat and acid which can produce putrid proteins which are more dangerous to your health than trans fats...

Additionally, when whey protein goes through processing to remove its fat content, it gets stripped of its important components – such as its phospholipids, phosphatidylserine, and cortisol.

Whey protein isolate is missing IgG immunoglobulins, which provide glutamine and cysteine. It also lacks key amino acids and nutritional cofactors that your body needs for assimilating the protein.

Once you end up with this heavily processed whey protein isolate, you’ve lost most of the primary reasons to eat whey protein in the first place!

Many Protein Bars Don’t Satisfy This Crucial Requirement

As my scientists and I began to look more closely at protein bars, we noticed an interesting trend...

While there are countless protein bars made with various forms of whey, soy, and casein (another protein source that I highly discourage), there are very few quality vegan protein bars out there...

Sure, you can find grain-based “energy” bars, but how many contain non-soy based protein?

If you are vegan or simply prefer an occasional plant-based source of protein, you have extremely limited choices!

Because I believe it’s important to mix up your protein sources – and simply have more choices in protein bars – my scientists and I set out to design one that would meet the criteria that I look for in a quality bar…

The ‘Ideal’ Vegan Protein Bar – Is It Possible?

So, what do I consider important when creating an “ideal” vegan protein bar?

  • Needs to taste great (that’s a given!)
  • Doesn’t detract from optimal health
  • Contains all-natural, organic ingredients – a truly organic protein bar
  • Uses a protein source other than soy, casein, or whey isolates
  • Relies on a high-quality, non-animal protein source that contains all the essential and non-essential amino acids in a healthy balance
  • Contains a source of dietary fiber
  • Has what I consider to be a better fat source for sustaining energy and satiety
  • Contains no artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup
  • Must be gluten-free, preservative-free, with no dangerous sulfites
  • Provides excellent value

I know that’s a hefty list of “must-haves”… and you might be wondering… is it really possible to concoct a vegan bar that meets such stringent requirements? And ends up tasting considerately better than the cardboard box it’s packed in?

I’m pleased to say we did it! We created a totally organic, high-quality vegan protein bar that passed every taste test with flying colors.

Let me tell you about my new Pure Power Protein Bar...

NEW Pure Power Protein Bar – Lower in Sugar, Higher in Fiber, and Packed with Superfood Proteins

My first Pure Power Protein Bar was a winner. However, I wanted to take the formula to the next level.

As you know, my goal is, and will always be, to deliver what I consider the very best. So my scientists and I sat down and revised my Pure Power Protein Bar recipe to:

  • Contain less sugar
  • Provide more fiber
  • Include superfood, clean protein sources

Of course, I didn’t change the delicious peanut and chocolate chip flavor. Nor did I mess with the moist, chewy bars that make them so well-liked.

They’re still exactly what you’d expect from a homemade, small batch-crafted bar, only better!

These Nutritional Powerhouse Gems Pack a Potent Protein

You’ve likely heard me talk about pumpkin seeds. They’re simply one of the most densely, nutrient-packed foods available today.

Pumpkin Seed
Pumpkin seed protein contains all the essential amino acids for muscle building

Boosting generous levels of nutrients like zinc, iron, copper, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, B vitamins, tocopherols, plant sterols, and omega fatty acids, few foods can compare.

What about pumpkin seed protein?

Containing many of the same nutrients found in the seed itself, this potent protein is a ‘superfood’ in itself:

  • Contains ALL the essential and non-essential amino acids
  • Highly digestible protein
  • Good source of dietary fiber
  • Contains antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals

And because pumpkin seed protein has the full array of both essential and non-essential amino acids, it provides the protein building blocks needed for muscle repair and the development of lean body mass.

However, I didn’t stop there. There was another plant protein superstar I had to add to our bars...

Sacha Inchi – Protein Powerhouse

Organic Sacha Inchi, a native South American plant, has been cultivated for centuries.

Sacha Inchi
Packed inside the dried sacha inchi pods are high-protein seeds

After the plant’s star-shaped green fruit pods slowly ripen to a blackish-brown hue, they’re left on the plant to dry for a couple more years before harvesting.

Hidden inside the dried fruits are seed clusters that, when cold-pressed, yield up to 65 percent protein!

Sacha Inchi protein powder is often considered “the complete package” as it contains all nine essential amino acids, including those needed for building muscle, naturally occurring fiber and antioxidants, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Highly digestible and gluten free, sacha inchi protein powder has a light, nutty flavor – a perfect addition to my Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar.

Then, a THIRD Outstanding Source of Plant Protein Was Added

Yellow Peas
Yellow peas are a great vegetarian source of protein.

Yellow peas are a great vegetarian source of protein.

Organic Pea Protein is made from Canadian yellow split peas and it’s:

  • Easily digestible and absorbable.
  • Free of soy, gluten, lactose and GMOs.
  • Well-tolerated by most individuals.

Non-hydrolyzed, pea protein can be very easy to digest, and it’s comparable to the best animal protein source.

In addition to a substantial supply of beneficial amino acids, pea protein also provides large amounts of the essential amino acids isoleucine, valine, arginine and lysine.

Pea protein is especially helpful for restoring muscle mass after a strenuous workout.

For a Satisfying Taste, We Added One of America’s Favorite (and Health Supporting) Foods

Peanuts
Peanuts contain more protein, niacin, folate and healthy phytosterols than any other nut.

Peanuts contain more protein, niacin, folate and healthy phytosterols than any other nut.

If you recall, great taste was number one on my list of requirements, as protein bars are meant to be enjoyed.

A staple in three-fourths of home pantries across the U.S., peanut butter has become a favorite food amongst both adults and children. Testament to its popularity, Americans now spend almost $800 million a year on peanut butter alone.

Rich and creamy peanut butter contributes more than just good taste; it’s a “health food” in itself. Peanuts contain more protein, niacin, folate and healthy phytosterols than any other nut.

A source of high-quality plant protein, two tablespoons of peanut butter contain about 8 grams of protein – more than any other nut.

For our Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar, we use creamy organic peanut butter made from blanched, flash-roasted peanuts to destroy impurities.

Of Course, We Couldn’t Skip the Chocolate…

Organic dark chocolate dip
Our Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar are dipped in semi-sweet, organic dark chocolate.

Like peanut butter, chocolate contains nutritional qualities – as long as it isn’t high in sugar.

For our Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar, we’ve added a generous coating of organic, semi-sweet chocolate, but not just any chocolate… We insisted on a high-quality dark chocolate rich in natural cacao that’s vegan and high in antioxidants.

To meet our standards and to make our Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar even more delicious, we chose organic chocolate ingredients (organic unsweetened chocolate and organic cacao butter) that are:

  • Non-dairy.
  • Fair Trade Certified.
  • Rich in cacao (60% cacao content)

You WON’T Find Artificial or Unhealthy Sweeteners in Our Bars

Artificial sweeteners, like Splenda™ (sucralose) or NutraSweet™ (aspartame), are sometimes used in protein bars to add to their flavors and make them appear lower in carbs, but they’re in fact not the “better” alternative. You won’t find them in our Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar.

Organic Dark Chocolate

Nor will you find sugar alcohols, like maltitol, sorbitol, glycerol or glycerin, that are often added to protein bars to reduce the total calorie count because they have fewer calories than sugar itself. Some of these can cause intestinal discomfort in certain individuals.

You also won’t find high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or other unhealthy high fructose sugars and syrups occasionally used in bars. HFCS is a chemically converted, unnatural corn-based sweetener that can have devastating effects on your health, being linked to obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Not only is HFCS commonly made using GMO corn, your body doesn’t metabolize it the same way it does sugar. Because it’s highly processed, it contains similar amounts of unbound fructose and glucose.

Whereas the glucose in other sugars can be used by your body and converted to blood glucose, the fructose from HFCS is a relatively unregulated source of fuel that your liver converts to fat and cholesterol. And that’s often in the form of highly undesirable (and dangerous) visceral or belly fat.

That’s not all… Because fructose doesn’t stimulate your insulin secretion or leptin production, the signal for you to stop eating simply isn’t there.

Is agave a better choice? Popular with many unsuspecting health enthusiasts, agave can contain as much as 90% fructose depending on the processing, potentially making it even worse than HFCS.

The bottom line… Both of these sweeteners can lead to an increased food intake and weight gain.

Organic Tapioca Syrup – For a Touch of Pleasing Sweetness and Soft Texture

oot of cassava plant
Our organic tapioca syrup comes from the root of the cassava plant.

To lightly sweeten our Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar, we use organic tapioca syrup – a natural product made from tapioca starch from cassava or yucca plant roots. Cassava is native to the tropical areas of South America and has been cultivated for thousands of years.

Raw cassava is made into syrup through the use of natural enzymes in a fermentation process. It is both gluten-free and non-GMO.

Unlike high fructose corn or agave syrups, tapioca syrup provides enough carbohydrates for energy but not too much to negatively impact your blood sugar and insulin levels.

Grown without pesticides, organic tapioca syrup is a perfect gluten-free sweetener for adding both a touch of sweetness and soft texture to our organic protein bars.

The Leader in ‘Green’ Protein Bars

In addition to the high-quality ingredients, we also wanted to create a protein bar that was produced in the U.S. by a company that is mindful of the environment.

We found exactly that…

My Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar are made in a facility that’s:

  • Built for pharmaceutical-grade nutraceuticals
  • Designed and built to European standards
  • Using state of the art bar processing methods
  • Dedicated, full time organic, gluten-free
  • 100% powered by clean and renewable solar energy
  • Focused on quality and food safety

In my opinion, their quality control is second to none. It surpasses anything I’ve seen in the United States and Canada! And what that means for you is this… you can be assured of the fresh bars with a maximum shelf life.

Even the wrappers are designed with care. They’re specially manufactured in a facility separate from the bars to prevent any materials in the wrapper from leaching into the bar. The organic protein bars stay fresh and wholesome through a special “cold seal” packaging process.

Not only are Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar delicious and nutritious, you can also feel good that you’re doing the environment a favor, too.

What Makes Pure Power Organic Vegan Protein Bar a Healthy Choice?
