  • Third, farmers shifted from the use of relatively small tractors and plows to the use of massive industrial machinery, further decimating the nutrient-creating microorganisms and soil structure.

As this shift was happening, the average U.S. farm size grew astronomically. In 1940, the average farm was around 200 acres. Today, most farms are over 1100 acres, and many are up to ten times that size.
