Did you know that the food you eat today contains far fewer nutrients than the food your grandparents ate?
It’s shocking, but the truth is, studies show that nutrient levels of many foods have plummeted over the last 50 to 75 years. Here are just a few examples:
- Broccoli: Between 1975 and 1997, broccoli experienced significant reductions in nutrient levels, including a 53% decrease in calcium, a 38% reduction in vitamin A and 17% less vitamin C.
- Wheat: Since the late 1960s, levels of minerals such as zinc, copper, and magnesium have declined substantially in wheat.
- Other Vegetables and Fruits: A comprehensive study comparing data from 1950 and 1999 on 43 different vegetables and fruits revealed declines in multiple nutrients, including protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron and riboflavin (vitamin B2).
Why is the food you find on grocery store shelves today so much less nutritious than the food your grandparents ate?
Sometime around the 1950s, agriculture made a drastic shift away from natural fertilizers that support the health of the soil and ecological balance.
And as they increased the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, the nutrient content of our food declined dramatically.
Decades of industrial farming have drained our soil of its natural goodness, leaving crops weaker and less nutritious.
At the same time, processed foods and artificial ingredients have taken over our diets, making it harder than ever to get the full spectrum of nutrients necessary for optimal health.
The result? Fatigue, weakened immunity, brain fog, and premature aging – symptoms many people chalk up to “getting older” but may instead be signs of nutritional deficiencies.
How did this happen? And what can you do to protect your health from the dangers of nutrient deficiency?
Industrial Farming and Soil Depletion – What Have They Done to Our Food’s Nutrients?
Healthy soils contain an immense diversity of microorganisms. These organisms are responsible for a plant’s uptake of nutrients, which in turn provides you with nutrients.
The widespread agricultural changes made in the 20th Century were expected to make food production easier and more cost efficient for farmers. But unfortunately, they had a huge unintended consequence… a perilous nosedive in food nutrient content.
Three primary factors forever changed our once-healthy food supply:
- Toxic synthetic chemicals used to kill pests and weeds also had lethal effects on beneficial soil microbes, crippling nature’s ability to provide the minerals needed for proper plant growth and nutrition.
- Synthetic fertilizers depleted the soil, as these highly processed fertilizers release nutrients quickly and add no benefits for soil structure, which is the way soil holds together to support water retention and air circulation.
- Farmers shifted from the use of relatively small tractors and plows to the use of massive industrial machinery, further decimating the intricate web of nutrient-creating microorganisms and soil structure.
At the same time this shift was happening; the average U.S. farm size grew astronomically. In 1940, the average farm was around 200 acres. Today, most farms are over 1100 acres, and many are up to ten times that size.
And then genetically modified (GMO) seeds and the weed killer glyphosate arrived on the scene. When they were introduced, any minerals still left in the soil became hyper-chelated and unavailable to plants – except for the patented GMO plants.
Conventional farming methods do not focus on the nutrient quality of food. Rather, modern agriculture concerns itself with growth rate, pest resistance and the physical traits of produce, like size.
Is it any wonder we’ve lost so many nutrients in the food we rely on for nourishing our bodies and keeping us healthy?
Why Your Body Needs Vitamins
Vitamins are essential nutrients that your body needs to function properly. Your body uses them in thousands of tiny chemical reactions that fuel everything in your body, from the hair on your head to the bones in your feet.
Getting enough vitamins is like making sure you put enough oil in your car – without them, your body will start having problems.
Vitamins are vital for keeping you energetic and active. They keep you looking youthful and vibrant. Some of the key things they do in your body include:
- Helping turn food into energy – When you eat, vitamins help convert your food into fuel your body can use.
- Supporting your immune system – As powerful antioxidants, they help your body defend against unfriendly invaders and oxidative stress.
- Facilitating vital cellular processes – Your cells use vitamins for healthy growth and repair processes.
- Assisting in normal wound healing – Vitamins help with cell migration and transformation, collagen synthesis and the creation of new blood cells.
- Generating protein and collagen – Your body needs these two substances for building and repairing muscle cell membranes and maintaining healthy skin.
- Maintaining healthy bones and teeth – Vitamins are involved in regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in your body.
Your body can’t produce most vitamins, so you must get them from a balanced diet.
Yet, as we’ve seen, thanks to modern farming practices and today’s dietary trends, that has become difficult to do.
Unless you regularly eat organic food grown using regenerative or Biodynamic® farming methods, and include a large variety of fresh, raw produce and pastured meats and eggs each and every day, you very well might need a multivitamin supplement.
For most of us, the day has come when supplementing your diet with a high-quality multivitamin is no longer a luxury – it’s now a necessity.
Let’s look at the vitamins that should be included in a well-formulated multi…
Needed For Over 1,000 Genes in Your Body – Yet Most People Don’t Get Enough
One of the most important vitamins is vitamin D – vitamin D3 to be precise. It’s also one of the easiest to run low on if you live in a temperate northern area with limited sunlight.
Scientists have been classifying vitamin D, also called cholecalciferol, as a hormone for many years. This is because the body is capable of making vitamin D on its own, if you have adequate year-round sunlight exposure. And many people don’t.
Studies conducted over nearly a century have found that vitamin D affects virtually every cell and tissue in your body by way of a special protein in your cells known as vitamin D receptor, or VDR.
By activating VDR, vitamin D directly affects the expression of more than 1000 genes in your body.
Vitamin D is essential for unlocking the genetic blueprints stored inside your cells. Normal, healthy expression of these genetic blueprints affects health throughout your body, including:
Bone mineralization* |
Cellular growth and development* |
Digestion and nutrient absorption* |
Blood sugar health* |
Heart health* |
Blood pressure health* |
Immune function* |
Joint health* |
Mood and overall feelings of well-being* |
Respiratory function and health* |
Muscular function* |
Skin health* |
Reproductive health* |
Weight management* |
The health of these systems affects things like your athletic performance, metabolic rate, and how well your body handles the aging process.*
With so much depending on your vitamin D intake, it’s important to make sure it’s included in your multivitamin in the form of vitamin D3.
Why Taking Vitamin K2 With Vitamin D3 Is a “Must”
When you take supplemental vitamin D3, it’s vitally important to also take vitamin K2. These two vitamins work synergistically, with vitamin D requiring vitamin K2 to function properly.
Vitamin D transports dietary calcium throughout your body. Vitamin K2 helps make sure the calcium ends up where it belongs – absorbed by your bones and teeth – and not where it could possibly jeopardize your health..
That’s why we formulated Multivitamin Mini-Tabs with K2 to complement D3. The vitamin K2 in our formula:
- Provides 180 mcg of Vitamin K2 as MenaQ7® – the optimal level of K2 in the first form to promote healthy, flexible arteries and overall heart health as well as bone health.*
- It is produced from fermented chickpeas, which has shown to be one of the most bioavailable, stable and beneficial varieties.*
- Is non-GMO and soy-free to avoid potential allergen concerns.
When looking for a top-quality vitamin K2 supplement, you will notice many brands don’t use MK-7, and if they do, it often comes from fermented soy. To avoid soy allergens, we use fermented chickpeas.
Just like vitamin D can’t function properly without vitamin K2, vitamin K’s benefits are impaired by too little vitamin D – so you need both nutrients together.
Two Fat-Soluble Vitamins Your Body Can’t Function Well Without
Just like vitamin D and vitamin K, vitamins A and E are fat soluble. These two vitamins play important roles throughout your body and should always be included in an effective multivitamin.
Maybe your mother told you should eat your carrots if you wanted to see in the dark. And she was right about the fact that vitamin A is essential for healthy eyesight.
But carrots and other plant foods contain beta carotene, which is a “provitamin.” That means it’s a precursor to vitamin A and your liver has to do some work to convert it into a form your body can use, retinyl palmitate.
For optimal benefits, we recommend looking for a multivitamin that contains this more bioavailable form, retinyl palmitate.
In addition to its important role in eye health, vitamin A is essential for healthy skin, immune function, and development.
However, over 40% of Americans don’t meet the daily recommended intake for vitamin A, making it an important ingredient in an effective multivitamin.
Vitamin E is an interesting vitamin. It’s a family of nutrients with slightly different molecular structures – four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. The most abundant form in nature is alpha tocopherol.
Your body needs vitamin E to support healthy immune function, cognitive performance, and inflammatory response. It also has powerful antioxidant properties, helping to fight free radical damage in your body.
You need to pay close attention to the quality of the vitamin E in your multi, as many brands use questionable synthetic vitamin E.
It can be tricky to identify synthetic vs. natural vitamin E, but the way to tell is this: naturally sourced vitamin E is listed on the label with a "d" (d-alpha-tocopherol), while synthetic is most often listed with a "dl" (dl-alpha-tocopherol).
Also check to make sure it doesn’t contain GMO ingredients, soy or soybean oil derivatives, which carry potential health risks.
Help Safeguard Your Reproductive Health with This Much-Misunderstood Vitamin
More commonly known as folate, Vitamin B9 also goes by the names folic acid and 5-MTHF.
Folate plays an essential role in a variety of body processes, including repairing DNA, supporting cell growth, aiding in development, and helping with the maturing of red blood cells (RBCs).
Folate plays an especially important role in reproductive health. For women, it plays a vital role during the stages of follicular and embryonic development in pregnancy.
For men, it’s crucial for spermatogenesis, the process of forming sperm. Low levels of folate can contribute to DNA instability in sperm, which can affect fertility.
Not getting enough folate can lead to serious health issues. Deficiency can cause anemia, which is a lack of healthy red blood cells. It also increases the risk of cardiovascular issues and can lead to developmental problems.
You may have heard of folic acid, which is the synthetic form of naturally occurring folate. Folic acid has the potential to cause problems in your body and should be avoided.
The best form of supplemental folate is methylfolate, also known as the 5-MTHF. This form contains important methyl groups that help protect your liver from unnecessary stress.
It’s this type of folate that we include in our Multivitamin Mini-Tabs and Multivitamin Mini-Tabs for Women.
With 665 mcg for men and 1,335 mcg for women, you can be sure you’re getting enough to maintain healthy reproductive function, red blood cells and DNA repair processes.
Expertly Dosed and Easy to Swallow, This Multivitamin Actually Makes a Difference*
Issues created by soil depletion and nutrient deficient foods aren’t going away anytime soon. Until healthy regenerative practices become the norm in agriculture, a multivitamin should be part of everyone’s health regimen.
We carefully formulated Multivitamin Mini-Tabs to deliver just the right dose of each key nutrient, based on the latest research.
In addition to 665 mcg DFE (dietary folate equivalents) of the 5-MTHF form of folate, this ideal multivitamin supplies your body with:
- Vitamin D3 – 5,000 IU in the form of Cholecalciferol. This is the optimal level for providing an effective daily dose for most individuals.
- Vitamin K2 – 180 mcg, the optimal level of K2 to promote healthy, flexible arteries, overall heart health and bone health.* Our source, MenaQ7®, is made from fermented chickpeas, not soy, and is one of the most bioavailable varieties.
- Vitamin A – 5,000 IU of Retinol Palmitate, the more bioavailable form of vitamin A. Our source is non-GMO sourced.
- Vitamin E – 134 mg of natural d-Alpha-Tocopherol made from non-GMO sunflower oil, not the GMO soy used in many common products.
- Vitamin B12 – 1,000 mcg in the form of Methylcobalamin. Vitamin B12 supports healthy energy levels and is vital for nerve function, red blood cell production, bone health, energy, and mood regulation.* Men may face a higher deficiency risk, possibly due to genetic factors.
- Magnesium – 200 mg from Magnesium Glycinate, a chelated form that provides effective levels of absorption. Magnesium is essential for metabolizing vitamin D and supporting sleep, mood, and nervous system regulation.* Deficiency is linked to bone, cardiovascular, and metabolic issues. Up to 75% of Americans are low in magnesium.
- Choline – 550 mg from Choline Bitartrate. Neither a vitamin nor a mineral, choline is a unique nutrient crucial for cell structure and neurotransmission, affecting liver, cardiovascular, and brain health.*
Multivitamin Mini-Tabs are also soy-free, gluten-free and GMO-free.
Unlike many multivitamins that come in giant tablets that you have to choke down, our multivitamin comes in easy-to-swallow mini-tabs. Take five with breakfast and five with dinner to help make sure your body is getting the nutrition it needs.
Multivitamin Mini-Tabs for Women – Specifically Tailored for Women’s Health
Multivitamin Mini-Tabs are packed with vitamins and nutrients that everyone needs. But, of course, women of all ages have unique nutritional needs.
Because of this, we formulated Multivitamin Mini-Tabs for Women with higher levels of folate and choline plus two additional B vitamins that women have a special need for:
- Choline – 650 mg – Postmenopausal and pregnant or lactating women face a higher risk of choline deficiency due to reduced estrogen, which impacts choline synthesis. We included an additional 100 mg more than our regular formula to support healthy memory, mood, and cellular development.
- Folate – 1,335 mcg DFE – Because it’s so important for fetal development, women of childbearing age should be especially vigilant about getting enough folate. Our women’s formula includes twice the amount that we put in our regular formula.
Even after childbearing years, it’s important for women to get enough folate to support cardiovascular and cellular health.
- Vitamin B6 – 2 mg of Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, the most bioavailable form of vitamin B6. An essential water-soluble vitamin, your body can't produce or store vitamin B6, or Pyridoxine. Your body requires it for healthy metabolism, immune function and synthesizing neurotransmitters and hemoglobin.*
Essential for your liver, adrenal health and hormonal balance, B6 can help ease normal symptoms of PMS. Studies have found that the combination of magnesium and B6 is particularly effective for alleviating normal PMS symptoms.*
- Biotin – 2,500 mcg – Biotin is the name for vitamin B7. This special vitamin acts as a “coenzyme” by helping enzymes to make glucose, fats, and proteins. We included it in our women’s formula because it’s often low in pregnant women. Signs of biotin deficiency can include skin irritations, hair loss, and brittle nails.
Just like the regular formula, Multivitamin Mini-Tabs for Women come in mini-tabs so they’re easy to swallow.
Why Our Multivitamin Mini-Tabs Don’t Contain These Unnecessary Nutrients…
You may notice that Multivitamin Mini-Tabs don’t contain a few ingredients common in multivitamin formulas.
Multivitamin Mini-Tabs and Multivitamin Mini-Tabs for Women are targeted to provide the nutrients you are most likely to miss in a modern diet without overloading your body with nutrients you’re less likely to need – or can get in other ways.
So, we didn’t include calcium, vitamin C, copper or selenium.
Most adults get enough calcium from what they eat, so we chose to focus on vitamin D3, vitamin K2 and magnesium, which help with calcium absorption and utilization.
We also left out vitamin C because most adults are able to meet their ordinary daily need for vitamin C through their diets. Plus, having too much can negatively impact absorption of other nutrients like B12 and copper.
Another nutrient we chose not to include is copper. While copper is needed by your body for making hemoglobin, most adults get enough from their daily diets. Having too much copper can upset the balance of iron and zinc in your body.
Lastly, we felt selenium was unnecessary because your body only requires a small amount and you are most likely already getting it from your diet.
By targeting the nutrients in our multivitamin to the most common nutritional gaps in the modern American diet, we don’t tax your body with too much of a good thing – which, in some cases, can become a bad thing.
By carefully selecting only the most important nutrients, we’re also able to keep our Multivitamin Mini-Tabs and Multivitamin Mini-Tabs for Women affordable for you.
