I’m often asked what really matters when it comes to living a long, healthy life. If you asked me that question 10 years ago, you would have received a much different answer than the one I’d give today.
What we’ve learned about longevity and health in the last decade is nothing short of astonishing.
I am confident that you likely want to live as many productive, enjoyable and comfortable years as possible. So do I.
That’s why I’m going to pull back the curtains and share with you some of the most exciting research I’ve seen to date on this topic.
I believe these discoveries hold much potential, especially since today we’re surrounded by health-wrecking forces like EMFs, pollution, herbicides and pesticides in our food and water, declining nutrients in our soils, and countless untested chemicals in the items we use every day.
The ability to live a long, active life boils down to the health of your mitochondria and the integrity of the genetic material housed within your cells. All of the factors I just named ultimately impact both.
You must have an effective way of protecting your cells from these assaults or your health will pay the price. And some researchers now believe you may only have a 10-year window before free radical and oxidative damage becomes irreversible.
When that window started for you is anyone’s guess…

We Know We Can Extend an Animal’s Life… What About Yours?
In animal studies, calorie restriction appears to slow down the aging process.
When rhesus monkeys were fed about a third less calories, their healthy lifespan and survival rates increased significantly compared to the study control group.
When you restrict your calories or fast, many beneficial changes take place, including these three keys things:
- Your body shifts into a protective and regenerative mode
- Your cells and tissues double down to fight damaging free radicals and repair its genetic materials
- Your mitochondria undergo mitochondrial biogenesis, the process of replacing old, malfunctioning mitochondria with new ones
Fasting and the restriction of calories and non-fiber carbohydrates help activate your mitochondria. When there’s no or limited glucose available for energy, your body must rely on lipids and stored fats. This forces your cells to use their mitochondria, as they are their only means of producing energy from fat.
Shifting over to using fat for fuel instead of glucose is a profoundly effective way to help optimize your mitochondrial health. Beyond Calorie Restriction: This Natural Substance Tricks Your Body Into Regeneration Mode
What if there were other ways to get the same longevity effects as fasting – without actually restricting your calories?
This brings me to what I’ve learned from the latest research...
Researchers have isolated plant substances that mimic the effects of calorie restriction to help protect your mitochondria and genetic material, and to help slow premature aging.
One of the most significant hallmarks of aging is decreased numbers of healthy mitochondria.
The more undamaged, fully functioning mitochondria you have in your cells, the greater your odds are of living a long healthy life.
As you age, your mitochondria become progressively more damaged through oxidative stresses. Communication breaks down in large part to the age-related decline of a coenzyme found in all living cells: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+.
NAD+, sometimes called the “Molecule of Youth”, is essential for fueling the activity of sirtuins, including SIRT1 and SIRT3, two master regulators of aging.
SIRT1 and SIRT3 are proteins that require NAD+ to function. All are needed to effectively trigger the formation and optimal functioning of new mitochondria.
Your levels of NAD+ drop as you age, so your sirtuin activity declines as well. That impacts cellular signaling, which leads to mitochondrial dysfunction.
Transformed: The Equivalent of a 60-Year-Old to a 20-Year-Old Human in Just ONE Week
The remarkable effects of NAD+ on aging have been shown in mice studies.
In one recent study, researchers artificially boosted a group of elderly mice’s NAD+ levels with an injected pharmaceutical compound known to increase cellular levels of NAD+.
Within only one week of treatment, mitochondrial homeostasis was restored and the key biochemical markers of muscle health in a 22-month-old “old” mouse were restored to levels similar to a youthful 6-month-old mouse.
To appreciate that in human years, that’s like transforming the biochemical markers of a 60-year-old body to those of a 20-year-old!
How did this compound create such astounding changes?
It restored a high ratio of NAD+ to NADH, a cofactor that plays a key role in the production of energy. High levels of NAD+ (relative to NAHD) are needed for DNA repair and the activation of SIRT1.
This study impressed me, but I typically avoid the use of pharmaceuticals to increase my levels of NAD+. That’s what led me to look closer at one of my favorite teas…
Mice Fed This Plant-Sourced NAD Precursor Lived Even LONGER Than the Calorie-Restricted Group
I’ve been intrigued with Pau d'Arco’s potential benefits for health and longevity for a while now. This South American tree, also known as Lapacho, has been used as a tea for a number of health issues since at least 1873.
The most valuable part of the tree is the inner lining of the bark. It contains a substance called beta-lapachone, which powerfully increases, or up-regulates NAD+ inside your cells.
In a study with aged mice, researchers added beta-lapachone from Pau d’Arco bark into one group’s diet. With no other change in activity level or total calories, the following effects were noted, compared to the control group:
- Increased ratio of NAD+ to NADH in the muscle
- Higher number of intact mitochondria with normal structure, suggesting resistance to mitochondrial breakdown
- Less damage to mitochondrial proteins that reduce the production of damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS) inside the cell
- A decrease in body weight and body mass, compared to the level found in young adult mice
- Lower age-related markers in blood, such as increased glucose, lipids, and leptin
- Increased body temperature, suggesting a higher energy expenditure and body metabolism
- Higher capacity of associative memory
- Greater motor performance and muscular strength, as seen by up-regulated genes associated with muscle development
Surprisingly, beta-lapachone benefited the health of the mice even more than calorie restriction. The beta-lapachone group lived significantly longer than the calorie-restricted group, which lived significantly longer than the control group!
In addition, the researchers noted that beta-lapachone protected the mitochondrial structure better than calorie restriction.
Beta-Lapachone and Brown Fat: Another Key to Youthful Aging?
For years, researchers believed that brown adipose tissue, or brown fat, existed mostly in two groups: newborn infants and hibernating mammals.
Serving an important role for these two groups, brown fat is crucial for thermoregulation and stimulating energy expenditure by producing heat. Brown fat is especially rich in mitochondria.
As an adult, you have both white and brown adipose tissue, but your brown fat deposits have drastically declined with age. What you have left is around your spinal cord, kidneys, neck, and between your shoulder blades.
Researchers now believe that brown fat may hold the key to wellness, and by restoring your levels you may be able to significantly improve your health.
The reasons for losing brown fat as you age are complex, but we know that its loss can seriously impact your metabolic function, your cells’ ability to use insulin effectively, and mitochondrial biogenesis, or the production of new mitochondria.
Here’s where the science becomes very exciting... Mice studies show that the beta-lapachone found in Pau d’Arco bark can convert white fat into brown fat.
One eye-opening study even showed that beta-lapachone along with a high-fat diet stimulated the expression of brown-adipocyte genes, decreased weight gain and higher energy expenditure, compared to a control group of mice.
By using their plentiful mitochondria, brown fat cells may help regulate body weight and protect your vital organs, especially your heart and nervous system.
I’m sure you can conclude as I have, that having adequate brown fat in your body is a plus for weight management, mitochondrial health, and your heart and nervous system!
“We’ve Discovered THE Most Potent Longevity-Extending Pharmacological Intervention Ever Described in the Scientific Literature!”
As you can imagine, that quote really caught my attention while doing research for my “mitochondrial sauce.”
This profound statement came out of recent research on the effects of plant compounds on the lifespan of the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Saccharomyces cells are often used in longevity studies because they act much like mammalian cells. They age and die in a similar manner, and their lifespan can be increased by calorie restriction.
In this study, researchers isolated six new groups of molecules that slow down the chronological aging of yeast.
At the top of their list, an extract of white willow bark (Salix alba) increased the average lifespan of yeast by 475 percent and the maximum chronological lifespan by 369 percent – making it the most potent longevity-extending pharmacological intervention ever described in scientific literature.
Think about it… that’s a nearly five-fold extension in lifespan for this yeast!
And what’s especially noteworthy about these results is the yeast cells were not food-restricted. They were cultivated in two percent glucose.
This clearly shows that willow bark mimics calorie restriction, potentially by activating the same biochemical pathways.
So what is it about white willow bark that enables it to achieve such dramatic results?
Could This Herb Boost Your Numbers of Mitochondria as Much as Three-Fold, With No Negative Drug Effects?
When you consume willow bark, your liver metabolizes its major constituent – salicin – to salicylic acid, the same substance created in your body within just minutes of taking a dose of aspirin.
Researchers have learned that aspirin – and salicylic acid – may promote the production of new mitochondria in your cells by turning on SIRT1, the master regulator protein we talked about earlier.
A recent study with liver cells found that both aspirin and salicylic acid, by itself, increased the total concentration of mitochondria by two to three times.
This discovery has researchers suspecting that the positive effects seen with aspirin might actually be from salicylic acid, and not aspirin per se!
Although highly debatable (in my opinion), some believe that low-dose aspirin therapy may offer potential benefits to certain individuals.
I think white willow bark may be a much better option.
Because willow bark converts to salicylic acid in your liver, you get all its potential benefits without any of aspirin’s negative effects, even with low doses!*
And here’s one more potential benefit of white willow bark… Salicin, like calorie restriction, may help control iron in your body.* Iron overload is a serious, yet largely overlooked organ-damaging problem that’s common in men, and women above childbearing years.
From Being Applauded for What They Don’t Contain to Spotlighting Them for Their Healthy Components: Mushrooms Go Center Stage
Remember the days when everyone loved mushrooms because they contained nothing? No calories, no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol. Truly the dieter’s dream!
Now, we’re finally learning about their many valuable health-promoting qualities.
One of mushroom’s greatest benefits was discovered in 1909, but remained largely unrecognized until just recently.
Ergothioneine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that can only be produced by mushrooms, fungi, and a few soil bacteria.
Found in all of your tissues, ergothioneine accumulates in organs and cells that are typically exposed to high levels of oxidative stress, such as your red blood cells, liver, kidneys, and eye tissue. Your cells’ plasma membranes and mitochondria contain high concentrations of ergothioneine.
Here is what’s unique about ergothioneine:

The King Trumpet, or the King Oyster mushroom as it is also called, is known by the genus Pleurotus eryngii.
