Your digestive process starts in your mouth, even before you take that first bite of food, and continues in your stomach and small intestine.

Here’s how the three main groups of digestive enzymes help break down the components of your meal:

  • Carbohydrases are enzymes that break down carbohydrates such as starches, sugars and cellulose into more easily absorbed sugar molecules. These include amylase, lactase, cellulose, and Beta-glucanase.
  • Proteases are enzymes that break down intact protein molecules into individual amino acids for proper absorption. Examples of proteases are pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and peptidase.
  • Lipases are enzymes that break down fats into easily absorbable fatty acid and glycerol molecules. Bile aids the actions of lipases by breaking the fat into small droplets. Lipases break down triglycerides, support gall bladder function, and improve fat utilization by your body.

Once enzymes break down these macronutrients, the smaller molecules enter your bloodstream and play an important role in fueling your body, boosting your metabolism, and even making your cells’ DNA.

“If My Body Makes Its Own Digestive Enzymes, Why Do I Need Supplemental Enzymes?”

Many factors can contribute to digestive enzyme deficiency, or a state in which your body doesn’t produce enough of its own enzymes to properly digest food.

A shortage of enzymes can especially be problematic when you eat a meal heavily loaded with carbs or fats or proteins…

Three of the biggest factors that decrease your body’s enzyme production include:

  • Aging can lead to reduced enzyme production
  • Leaky gut through the impairment of your small intestines’ lining
  • Inflammation from toxins, stress, and food sensitivities

Your natural enzyme production starts to decline at around age 20. By age 40, your production of enzymes drops about 25 percent from that of your earlier years. You could be producing as little as a third of the enzymes you need by 70.

A leaky, damaged gut and an inflamed gastrointestinal tract can also cause an enzyme deficiency. When your gut lining wall becomes irritated or damaged (glyphosate is a potent gut destroyer), your production of enzymes can be impacted.

And when you don’t produce enough digestive enzymes – and you’re not taking a digestive supplement with meals – you run the risk of depleting your body’s production of metabolic enzymes. That’s not a good thing as every cell in your body requires enzymes to function.

Unless you are eating a predominately raw diet, your food is mostly enzyme deficient. Processing and cooking at temperatures above 116 degrees Fahrenheit renders most naturally occurring enzymes inactive.

  1. Gluten Enzymes will not resolve a food allergy or disease. These enzymes are intended for those with gluten sensitivities. Individuals with severe allergies or celiac disease should never intentionally consume gluten.   2. Yes, you can take one or as many formulas together as you need. Be sure to take them all at the start of your meal for best results.

  3. We’ve formulated Dairy Enzymes to contain at least twice the amount of lactase as either of the Full Spectrum formulas plus additional protease to target lactose and dairy proteins. Chances are, if you are lactose intolerant or sensitive to milk proteins, you will want more of both enzymes than what’s in either of the Full Spectrum formulas.

  4. Yes. If you discover you’ve eaten dairy or gluten by mistake, take the product as soon as possible. The closer to the meal you take it, the more effective it will be. While it is ideal to take enzymes directly before the meal, taking it afterward will still provide some benefit.

  5. It depends on the amount of meat you eat. If you eat lots of meat, then the Full Spectrum Enzymes will be most helpful. If you tend towards eating salads and vegetables primarily, then the Full Spectrum for Women will be most helpful.

  6. The Full Spectrum for Women is primarily designed for women’s diets that are typically higher in vegetables. That makes it a good choice for vegans, too, male or female. You can take it by itself, or pair with Diairy Enzymes, Gluten Enzymes, or Ketozyme as desired.

  7. Yes. We formulated these products to be taken by themselves. However, for a more comprehensive approach, they are designed to be paired with Full Spectrum Enzymes or Full Spectrum Enzymes for Women.

  8. There is no “one-size-fits-all” answer. Those with mild sensitivities may find that by taking a serving of Gluten Enzymes before a carb-heavy meal, they can tolerate the gluten in that meal much better. Those with a stronger reaction to gluten may find they need the additional support of a Full Spectrum Enzyme or may need to reduce their gluten consumption.
