Calm Your Environment and Stimulate Your Senses... Getting the Most From Your Essential Oils

Finding Certified Organic essential oils is just the first step… Getting them into your body without harming their fragile components is the second, and possibly most important step of all. Are you maximizing your potential benefits?

The use of essential oils has recently skyrocketed – and for good reason. One of nature’s best-kept secrets for centuries, essential oils are a simple and effective way to shift your mood and vitality almost instantaneously.

Embraced by cultures since possibly the ancient Egyptians, they’re time-tested and now research-confirmed. High-quality organic essential oils can indeed support your emotional and even physical health.

What are essential oils? The purest essential oils are extracted from the leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, bark, stems and roots of wild-grown plants carefully cultivated in various climates and regions around the globe. When produced and handled with care, they can retain important therapeutic qualities of the plant.

However, as potentially valuable as they may be, essential oils just sitting in a bottle won’t do you much good. You must get them into your body.

While many people like to massage them into their skin using a carrier oil – and that’s an excellent way to use certain essential oils, the fastest and most efficient way to get essential oils into your lungs and throughout your body is through your sense of smell or your olfactory system.

A Virtual Expressway to Your Brain and Emotions

Of all your five senses, your sense of smell is the fastest way to reach your brain.

Essential Oil Smell
When you inhale an essential oil, the benefits are almost instantaneous

In your nose are smell receptors that respond to scents. These receptors send chemical messages along the nerve pathways to your brain’s limbic system, also known as your “emotional brain.”

Your limbic system controls many basic functions: your breathing, heart rate, memory, stress levels, and even your hormones. It’s intimately involved with your moods and emotions.

When your limbic system or your “emotional brain” is stimulated by the scent of an essential oil, it can have profound effects on your mind and body. Scents can invoke memories, stimulate feelings, and arouse your senses.

However, with essential oils, it’s important to note that your olfactory system isn’t just limited to your nose…

Certain essential oils can be absorbed through your nasal cavity and through your bronchial tract and lungs.

All these “fast track” delivery systems help explain how your body – and your brain – can respond so quickly to a calming or invigorating essential oil scent!

Four Ways to Get Essential Oils Into Your Body Via Your Olfactory System

Heat Oil Diffuser
A heat diffuser may be a popular way to use essential oils, but heat and flames can destroy an oil’s fragile components

There are 4 types of essential oil diffusers, some preferable to others…

  1. Dry or Nebulizing Diffuser – Air is pumped through a chamber filled with the essential oil, creating a vacuum to disperse the oil into the room as superfine droplets. Best to run only 15 minutes out of every hour to conserve oil and allow your olfactory system time to recover.
  2. The Pros:

    • Saturates large rooms quickly
    • Offers greatest concentration of essential oil components
    • Doesn’t require water

    The Cons:

    • Requires more drops of essential oils
    • Can be noisier than other diffusers
    • Typically must set timer to control run time
  3. Ultrasonic Diffuser - Uses electronic frequencies to disperse oils from a small reservoir of water via a jet of air. A small disc under the water creates vibrations that break the essential oil up into micro fine particles, even finer than a nebulizing diffuser, and then uses the room’s natural air flow to disperse the mist. These particles are small enough to be inhaled into your lungs and into your body for maximum potential therapeutic benefits.
  4. The Pros:

    • Superfine particles easier for your lungs to absorb
    • Uses only a small amount of oils
    • Typically quieter than a nebulizing diffuser

    The Cons:

    • Requires diluting essential oils in water
    • May not be as concentrated as the nebulizing diffuser
    • Plastic reservoir
  5. Evaporative Diffuser – Systems using inhalers, pendants, devices, and even fans that depend upon air diffusion to evaporate and disperse the essential oils. You receive the essential oil in two stages: the lighter molecules first, and then the heavier ones.
  6. The Pros:

    • Quiet, passive way to receive the aroma
    • Ideal for use in car or while traveling

    The Cons:

    • Less therapeutic value because you don’t get all the essential oil molecules at the same time
  7. Heat Diffuser – Uses heat to evaporate the essential oil, which alters its chemistry and renders it ineffective.
  8. The Pros:

    • Silent operation

    The Cons:

    • Damages the fragile components of the essential oil
    • You don’t get all the essential oil molecules at once
    • Few, if any, therapeutic benefits

The two types of diffusers that I recommend are the Ultrasonic Diffuser and the Dry (or nebulizing) Diffuser. The two most important qualities of a diffuser is that it  must preserve the fragile components of the essential oils and disperse them in a way for you to benefit.

The Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser – Attractive, Practical, and Affordable

I’ve found two diffusers that work well for diffusing my essential oils.

The first is a practical ultrasonic diffuser – my Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser.

This attractive European-designed diffuser looks smart in any setting and it offers countless features not typically found in such affordable units.

The Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser:

  • Is made from hand-cut bamboo and topped with an elegant ribbed ceramic cover
  • Uses an ultrasonic ceramic chip for diffusion, eliminating the need for heat or flames
  • Provides a peaceful and soothing experience with its nearly silent fan function
  • Is programmable from 1 to 3 hours to control the length and intensity of the scent in your room
  • Has an auto stop function that switches the diffuser off at the end of your chosen program or when your diffuser runs low on water
  • Is perfect for use before bedtime or as a nightlight with its warm golden-tone light that switches on or off independently of mist function
  • Uses tap or filtered water – no need for distilled water
  • Has a compact footprint – approximately 5 inches wide by 6 inches high
  • Uses low-energy LED lighting and mist functions use only 12 watts of power
  • Is easy to clean – simply wipe out with a tissue between uses and rinse every 3 to 6 uses
  • Is ideal for bedroom, den, or office diffusion (approximately 85 square feet)

Add Water and Certified Organic Essential Oils and…
Presto, It’s Aromatherapy Time!

Now that I’ve found the ideal ultrasonic diffuser, let’s take a look inside…

Protective Cover
A view of the inside reservoir and protective cover of the Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser

The attractive ceramic dome cover easily lifts off to add water and your essential oils. Inside you’ll find the water reservoir and protective cover to help guard against spills, made of high-quality plastic to minimize the occurrence of mold and bacteria.

Lift off the protective cover and add about a half-cup of warm water (filtered or tap water work fine) to the reservoir. Fill only as high as the maximum fill line.

Now it’s time to add a few drops of essential oils… I recommend using my Organic Essential Oils because they’re:

  • Certified Organic and contain no genetically engineered ingredients. The botanicals used in my oils are grown in soil that doesn’t contain pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or herbicide residues.
  • Extracted using safe, gentle methods either cold press extraction or natural steam distillation – to preserve potency, aroma, and effectiveness. Our manufacturer never uses harsh or harmful chemicals.
  • Quality tested for identity, purity, potency, quality, safety, color, and aroma. You know you’re getting the real thing in its purest form – just 100 percent essential oil. Nothing’s been added to dilute or adulterate the oil.
  • Packaged in a state-of-the-art facility with their own in-house laboratories for the testing of raw materials, samples, and finished products for quality and safety. This facility even has a thermostatically controlled warehouse and temperature sensitive storage and refrigeration!

With the Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser, 3 to 6 drops of my 100 percent pure, Certified Organic essential oils is usually sufficient. Unlike many other diffusers, you can use your oils sparingly – a real potential money saver.

Simple to Operate… No Confusing Programs to Figure Out

Aroma Diffuser Controls
The controls on my Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser are simple to understand

Press the “MIST” button to turn on the diffuser. Press the button again to set the timer:

  • Once for 1 hour
  • Twice for 2 hours
  • Three times for 3 hours

A light will appear to indicate which program you’ve selected.

You’ll appreciate the easy-to-use timer function when you want to use a stronger scent, run special aromatherapy treatments, and when you want to drift off to sleep.

When the time is up, or if your diffuser runs out of water, it automatically turns off.

To turn on the softly glowing light, press the “LIGHT” button once. The light stays on until you turn it off, making it perfect for wherever you want a gentle, warm light.

And because it’s a soft golden color, it won’t upset your body’s melatonin production in the evening!

The color of light that your eyes are exposed to at night can potentially affect your circadian rhythm and melatonin production. The ideal wavelengths for nightlights and clocks is within the red to yellow spectrum. Blue or green tones interfere the most with your melatonin production.

So when it comes to choosing a light that will remain on either before you fall asleep or during the night, make sure it’s in yellow-to-red range for healthy circadian rhythms and sleep quality!

Prefer a Top-of-the-Line Nebulizing Diffuser? Introducing the Dry Aroma Diffuser for an Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience

Dry Diffuser

Compact in size (measures approximately 4 and 1/2 inches wide and 4 inches tall), the Dry Aroma Diffuser packs a lot of aromatherapy power!

If you want to saturate your space quickly with the scent, and the valuable components of organic essential oils, the Dry Aroma Diffuser gets the job done. The Dry Aroma Diffuser is a waterless diffuser that diffuses the essential oils in their pure form.

With its neutral and attractive blond-colored solid wood base and glass reservoir and nozzle, you can enjoy an ultimate aromatherapy experience in any room or location of your choosing.

It’s easy to operate my Dry Aroma Diffuser too…

A single silver control knob switches the unit on and off, and allows you to control its speed of operation.

To use, simply lift the glass nozzle and add 10 to 15 drops of one or your desired combination of essential oils to the reservoir. I recommend using my 100 percent organic essential oils for optimal benefits.

The Dry Aroma Diffuser requires no water to operate. Within seconds, it begins drawing the essential oil(s) up through the internal spray nozzle and then sprays it against the wall of the reservoir, creating droplets. The droplets then disperse through the glass nozzle’s small opening, diffusing powerfully into your space.

Operating at a soft purr, the Diffuser runs continuously for 5 minutes and then rests silently for 3 minutes until you turn the control knob to the off position. This intermittent operation conserves your oils and allows your olfactory system to fully benefit from the oil’s components. You don’t need to monitor it yourself!

I recommend switching your unit off after a maximum of 3 hours use, as you will have now received the essential oils’ maximum potential benefits.

Q & A
  1. 1. I’ve seen other diffusers that disperse essential oils for 8 hours. Why do these only allow for 3 hours?

Something many people don’t realize about essential oils is their rapid evaporation rate. After 3 hours, the fragile components of 100 percent essential oils have vanished! Any diffuser that runs longer than 3 hours is essentially a waste of energy because you’re no longer receiving any potential therapeutic benefits from the essential oil.

  2. 2. Can the Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser be safely left in the room for the rest of the night after it has run out of water? Will it make any noise when there is no water left?

Yes, it can safely be left in a room overnight. The Ultrasonic Diffuser will shut off automatically either at the end of the program you’ve chosen (1, 2, or 3 hours) or when the water reaches a certain level. The Ultrasonic Diffuser won’t ever run completely dry. Plus, it won’t make any noise when the water runs low.

  3. 3. How difficult is it to clean the Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser? Do I have to take it completely apart?

Only the inside reservoir on the Ultrasonic Diffuser requires actual cleaning every 3 to 6 uses. To do that: Fill the reservoir tank halfway with clean water. Add 10 drops of white vinegar. Replace the plastic protective cover. Turn on the diffuser and allow it to run 3 to 5 minutes. Turn off and drain the water from the reservoir.

Between uses, simply wipe out the reservoir with a tissue (if you’re changing essential oils). No soaps or harsh chemicals are needed to keep your Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser clean!

  4. 4. Do I need to shut off the Dry Aroma Diffuser after use or does it turn off automatically?

The Dry Diffuser does not shut off by itself. You need to turn the dial to the off position either at the end of 3 hours or sooner if you no longer want it to run.

  5. 5. How do I maintain the Dry Aroma Diffuser?

Between each use, I recommend draining and rinsing the reservoir to remove any oil or sediment.  Clean the inside of the glass reservoir with a mild unscented cleaner, like my Greener Cleaner Multi-Surface Household Spray or an organic dish soap. Rinse well and allow to dry before using. Periodically, follow enclosed instructions for a more thorough cleaning of the nozzle and wooden base.

  6. 6. How do I choose between the two diffusers?

Both types of diffusers are suitable for aromatherapeutic purposes. The advantages and disadvantages of each type’s operation have been explained above. The dry diffuser produces a more pungent aroma while the ultrasonic diffuser aroma is gentler. Both present the essential oil vapors with their full complement of components. It’s simply a personal preference.

  • This is an international model with an included 220 volt electrical plug. It is not designed for use in the United States and Canada without an adapter plug, which must be purchased separately.
