The world’s honeybees are in trouble like never before.
While not a new development, the percentage of bee colonies lost in the last decade mark the first and second highest losses since experts first started tracking them. Just in the last year, nearly half of U.S. honeybee colonies died.
Why does it matter, you might wonder?
It’s estimated that one out of every three bites of food that go into your mouth relies on the work of honeybees. And if you enjoy eating fruits, vegetables and nuts, that number goes much higher.
Without bees to pollinate crops, farmers simply can’t grow things like blueberries, apples, melons, almonds, and even coffee and chocolate. More than 130 fruits, vegetables and nuts and 35% of the world’s crops depend on pollinators like bees.
Farmers who depend upon bees for pollinating their crops are forced to rent honeybee colonies from commercial beekeepers who are working harder than ever to keep up with the demand.
Yet, it’s not a simple process… According to one farmer who rents loads of bees each spring to pollinate the millions of flowers across his six acres of blueberries, “each flower has to be visited six to eight times by a honeybee to become fully pollinated.”
Make no mistake, it’s a time-consuming process for the bees and the farmers, and it comes at a cost for consumers, often translating to higher prices at checkout.
So, what does all this have to do with your health?
There’s no question this is a serious and disturbing issue that potentially affects our healthy food supply.
However, there is another side to this story that has everything to do with your health.
Before we go any further, let’s find out what’s behind the alarming decline in pollinators, as that’s where the story of your health begins…
What’s Happening to the Bees and Other Pollinators?
It’s not just bees that are in crisis. All the world’s pollinators – bees, bats, birds, butterflies, moths, beetles and other insects – are facing unprecedented challenges.
From habitat loss to disease and parasites to environmental contaminants, pollinators are struggling and losing the battle.
An overwhelming number of scientific studies points to chemical pesticide exposure as a direct cause of the collapse of honeybees and other pollinators. Pesticides are also posing a major risk to the ecosystem and human health worldwide.
Today, almost half of all U.S. farmland is planted with seeds coated with pesticides, or specifically neonics, or neonicotinoid insecticides.
Rather than sitting on the outside of the plant, neonics are absorbed throughout all parts of the plant. When a bee or other pollinator collects pollen or nectar – or even drinks dew droplets on the leaves – the toxic insecticide stuns the insect’s nervous system, triggering paralysis and death.
A single corn seed treated with neonics contains enough toxin to kill over 80,000 honeybees or a single songbird.
What’s more, neonics weaken the immunity of bees and makes them more vulnerable to viruses and parasites, like the Varroa mite. This voracious parasite feeds on bees and increases their risk of early death. As if that isn’t bad enough, neonics enhance the fertility of the Varroa mite.
With all these disturbing truths now so evident, you may be thinking… is there any hope?
The Beekeepers Who Are Saving Bees and Providing You With One of Nature’s Gifts
With all these factors working against bees and other pollinators, it may be hard to envision a solution.
However, there is a solution and it lies in the hands of a select group of beekeepers.
An Italian company called B Natural has committed itself to protecting bee colonies by contracting with carefully screened beekeepers located mostly along the 45th parallel above and below the equator in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Viewing beekeepers as bees’ best hope for survival, B Natural engages their beekeepers to go the extra mile to defend and protect their bee colonies by providing healthy environments free of pesticides and other contaminants.
Through this process, B Natural has become an expert in a little-known by-product naturally produced by the bees in the hive as part of normal beehive maintenance.
This dark, sticky substance, known as “bee glue” or propolis, functions as the hive’s immune system and helps preserve the health of the colony against threats with its more than 300 active compounds.
Propolis is created by bees when they mix their saliva with beeswax, along with compounds from plants and trees. The bees use this “bee glue” to seal holes and cracks in the hive to keep out intruders.
However, what’s most important for human health can be found in the details of how propolis supports the health of the beehive…
Propolis: The Little-Known By-Product of Beehives
Since ancient times, man has been using the bounty of bees to heal and prosper.
Propolis has been used in traditional and folk medicine as early as 300 B.C…
Egyptians used propolis to stop the decomposition of bodies during the mummification process. Greek physician Hippocrates, the father of medicine, prescribed propolis for various kinds of disorders, both internal and external.
Researchers have identified more than 300 separate compounds in propolis. The most important active polyphenols, or antioxidants, include:
-
Chrysin – A bioflavonoid compound found in high levels in propolis and used in traditional medicine to support respiratory health and an already normal inflammatory response.*
-
Galangin – An active polyphenol, also found in high levels in propolis, that promotes healthy cell growth, as well as providing antioxidant benefits.*
-
Pinocembrin – A flavonoid in propolis that helps reduce damaging reactive oxygen species, protects the blood-brain barrier, and helps support healthy mitochondrial function.*
-
Apigenin – Long used in traditional medicine, this bioactive flavonoid supports healthy cell growth, provides antioxidant benefits and promotes an already normal inflammatory response.*
-
Pinobanksin – A strong antioxidant in propolis that supports healthy immune function and an already normal inflammatory response.*
-
Quercetin – One of the most important bioactive flavonoids, it’s best known for its support for an already normal inflammatory response, heart health, blood pressure levels already in the normal range, respiratory and metabolic health.*
With their powerful antioxidant properties, these six groups of compounds are thought to be the key to the extraordinary health benefits of propolis, including immune system and upper respiratory tract health support.*
Standardized Polyphenol Content Including its 6 Most Active Polyphenols, This Breakthrough Propolis is Top Notch
While propolis is used worldwide largely as a traditional remedy for bothersome seasonal symptoms, not all propolis products are the same.
Bees aren’t always the best at quality control. They produce propolis to meet the needs of their hives – and not necessarily your body’s needs.
Natural propolis, straight from the hive, is not always consistent in quality, and it’s certainly not standardized to its most valuable components. And depending on when and where it is collected, its chemical composition and biological activity can vary.
The same holds true for propolis products currently on the market – which show notable variations in quality. Until now, there has been no assurance that the propolis product even contained any of the six most valuable polyphenols.
And then there’s the issue of adulteration… Genuine propolis can sometimes be hard to identify, as its natural color can vary from green to red to brown. Many propolis products have been found to contain poplar extract instead of propolis.
Over the past decade, B Natural has been working to change all this…
In keeping with their mission to protect bees and, at the same time, deliver a high-quality propolis extract, they’ve developed a patented method – the Multi Dynamic Extraction (MED) – to produce a consistent, standardized propolis extract with its characteristic profile of over 300 active compounds intact, including the six major polyphenols.
The MED process involves purification of the raw material, removal of waxes and resins, extraction and concentration to create a base ingredient that contains up to 50% polyphenols.
Shown in Studies to Support Respiratory and Other Aspects of Health*
Used for health since antiquity, propolis’ bioactivity and health benefits have been extensively researched in thousands of journals. Its many potential benefits include the following:
-
Upper respiratory and lung health support*
-
Immune defense support*
-
Antioxidant support for healthy cells and tissues*
-
Cellular health support*
-
Support for an already normal inflammatory response*
-
Cardiovascular health support*
-
Support for healthy blood pressure levels already in the normal range*
Until recently, there was no double-blind clinical research – the “gold” standard for research – demonstrating the effectiveness of propolis for the support of upper respiratory tract health.
Now, with a standardized propolis extract with its active compounds intact, this has opened the doors for reliable and trustworthy research. To date, 26 articles and 12 research studies have been published on MED propolis.
